Positive Practices in Behavioral Support Through Nonlinear Applied Behavior Analysis

A professional evidence-based lecture series on positive behavior support delivered on-demand across 4 modules.
Presented by: Gary W. LaVigna, Ph.D., BCBA-D and Thomas J. Willis, Ph.D., co-founders of IABA®

  • Positive Practices in Behavioral Support Through Nonlinear Applied Behavior Analysis is a lecture series that describes an evidence-based model of positive behavioral support. The series is divided into 4 Modules and participants are presented with a knowledge test at the end of each session.

Module 1: Nonaversive Behavioral Support and Basic Principles of Positive Programming

Module 1 provides an overview of a person-centered, nonlinear, multi-element model for providing positive behavioral supports will be presented, and also a full description of the roles that ecology, positive programming, and reinforcement play within this model will be discussed.

Module 2: Comprehensive Functional Assessment and Advanced Support Strategies

Module 2 provides in-depth training in behavioral assessment, functional analysis of behavior and how the qualified professional can use this information to develop positive behavioral support plans.

Module 3: Emergency Management and Reactive Strategies Within a Positive Practices Framework

Module 3 provides an overview of emergency management and reactive strategies that might be used as part of a complete non-linear, multi-element support plan.

Module 4: Assuring Staff Consistency and the Provision of Quality Services

Module 4 is based on the book, The Periodic Service Review, this module focuses on how to maximize staff consistency in service implementation using effective staff supervision strategies based on the principals of Organizational Behavior Management.

  • This 4 module program covers topics including but not limited to:

    • The evidenced based IABA® Multi-element Model

    • Comprehensive Functional Assessment

    • Person-Centered Positive Behavioural Support

    • Emergency Management and Reactive Strategies Within a Positive Practices Framework

    • Assuring Staff Consistency and the Provision of Quality Services

Click on the register button below for more information on each module, the "run-time" of each session, and to purchase assess to the lecture series.

Each Module costs $125.00 (USD) for 10 days access. If you want your agency to be invoiced, you can get in touch with our training team to make arrangements by contacting us here.

First Resort Strategies: Using ABA to Minimize Restrictive Practices

This "read then test" course is designed to provide a range of non-aversive reactive strategies, which are more effective in keeping people safe, as measured by their effect on Episodic Severity (ES), than common restrictive procedures.

  • Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is Applied Behavior Analysis in support of people who exhibit challenging behavior. The Behavior Analysis Certification Board states that, "The behavior analyst recommends reinforcement rather than punishment whenever possible... Behavior analysts review and appraise the restrictiveness of procedures and always recommend the least restrictive procedures likely to be effective." It is recognized that a restrictive (aversive) procedure may be necessary to keep everyone safe but not if a non-aversive procedure is more likely to keep everyone safe.

This "read then test" course is designed to provide you with a range of non-aversive reactive strategies (NARS). These strategies are more effective in keeping people safe, as measured by their effect on Episodic Severity (ES), than any of the restrictive procedures that are often used. This leads to the conclusion that restrictive procedures should be used as a last resort and that NARS should be our first resort.

The required readings for this course include this introduction and the following:

    1. An introduction to Episodic Severity. published in 2005

    2. A 2022 publication in Perspectives in Behavior Science that details a Multi-element model for using NARS

    3. A 2016 publication that makes an important distinction between function-based and non-function-based NARS and evaluates their relative effectiveness in reducing ES.

    4. California Department of Developmental Services Guidelines for the Use of Restraint or Containment. These guidelines explicitly refer to Episodic Severity and Non-aversive reactive strategies.

    3.0 CEU credits for BCBAs.

NOTE: We are including this state-specific document as an example of legislation that is being considered in multiple states relating to the use of restraint. Even if you are not located in California, we feel that this information will be very useful to understand the type of legislation that is being proposed across the USA and other regions of the world.
