Who are WE?
The IABA Research and Education Foundation is led by researchers, practitioners, and lived experience experts, using over 40 years of education, research and applied positive behavioral practices at the Institute for Applied Behavior Analysis (IABA), to help solve the most current and pressing concerns of our trainees and partners around the globe.
Building on the transformational work of Dr. Gary LaVigna and Dr. Thomas Willis in positive behavior practices, the Multi-Element Behavior Support (MEBS) training is designed to inspire and motivate. Their early adoption of forward-thinking approaches to neuroaffirming, compassionate, and comprehensive support forms the foundation of MEBS. This training has the potential to transform your professional practice and the lives of those you support.
Why should you join us?
MEBS, an integration of humanistic, constructivist, and applied behavior approaches, is consistent with research and clinical guidelines. It is adaptable across various settings and offers practical benefits. As an application of Positive Behavior Support (PBS), this training enables practitioners across all disciplines to employ multicomponent personalized strategies. These strategies extend beyond a linear focus on behavior challenges, incorporating proactive, reactive, and skill-building interventions to enhance and promote positive outcomes and improved lives.
What our trainees have to say:
"I like how the course facilitator presented the information in language that could be universally understood."
"Behavioral practice as guided by values of dignity and positive programming really resonated with me."
"Really enjoying thinking more about the meaning behind the function. It's something I think we already try to do, but this session really solidified the linear vs nonlinear approach to ABA."
"Great/privileged to be a part of this training - learned a lot of new and valuable things as a new behavior practitioner, which will inform various aspects of my practice."
THE DETAILS:
Commencing on August 26th-28th in London, this research-standard, evidence-based positive practices training course spans three full days of in-person training and collaboration. It introduces an evidence-based model of Positive Behavior Support (MEBS) covering foundational components including:
Conducting a comprehensive functional assessment
Designing a function-based Multi-Element Positive Behaviour Support Plan
Developing dignity-driven procedures to use in emergency situations
Methods to support practice leadership and ensure the fidelity of the plan's implementation.
This training program will be presented by long-term IABA faculty and industry leader, Lori Ann Dotson, PhD, MBA, and Linda Hume, RNLD, MSc. Their extensive experience and expertise ensure that the following topics will be covered in depth and with the highest quality of instruction.
MEBS assessment process:
Identify and define behaviours of concern/challenging behaviour from a person-centred perspective.
Utilise the four-term contingencies of understanding behaviour
Identify the message that underlies behaviours of concern/behaviours that challenge.
Understand the concept of Episodic Severity™;
Use Data-Based decision making.
The Multi-Element Behaviour Support Model (MEBS):
To understand Positive Behaviour Support.
Define all parts of MEBS.

Discover the values and components of practice leadership and understand its importance.
Explore how practice leadership supports MEBS: Assessment, Planning, Implementation & Evaluation.
How does MEBS, as both an organizational and clinical framework, ensure coherence between clinical and organizational practices?
In addition to 21 hours of live synchronous training this August, enjoy access to nearly thirty hours of recorded content from luminaries Dr. Gary LaVigna and Dr. Thomas Willis through December 31, 2025, available at no additional cost.
Credentialing in multi-element behavior support begins September 1. Stay tuned for more details on how this training can lead to a Level One Knowledge Credential in MEBS.
